Getting started
Which course fits your current skills and experience, and what do you need before attending?
Do I need prior healthcare experience to take the Phlebotomy Training Course?
No. The Phlebotomy Training Course is appropriate for everyone, from beginners with no healthcare experience to experienced healthcare professionals who want to learn, strengthen, or refresh their venipuncture skills. Small class sizes allow the instructor to provide individual guidance based on each student’s current experience, needs, and skill level.
Are there prerequisites for the IV Therapy Training Course?
Yes. The IV Therapy Training Course is a second-level, hands-on course. Students must already have foundational venipuncture skills, including the ability to properly apply and secure a tourniquet, locate and palpate veins, and perform basic venipuncture using proper technique.
Students may meet this prerequisite by completing our Phlebotomy Training Course or through relevant hands-on experience. Prior IV insertion experience is not required.
What is the difference between the Phlebotomy Training Course and the IV Therapy Training Course?
The Phlebotomy Training Course is a two-day course that teaches foundational venipuncture skills. It covers the circulatory system, vein locations and selection, different needle types, proper tourniquet tying and placement, vein identification and palpation, patient interaction, safe sharps handling, and proper venipuncture technique. No prior healthcare or phlebotomy experience is required.
The IV Therapy Training Course is a four-hour, second-level course for healthcare professionals who already have foundational venipuncture skills. It covers vein and IV catheter selection, IV insertion and cannulation techniques, catheter securing, saline-lock preparation, fluid administration, patient assessment, troubleshooting, and recognizing and responding to potential complications.
Certification and what the courses provide
What students receive after successful completion and how course completion relates to national certification, state requirements, and scope of practice.
Does the Phlebotomy Training Course prepare me for national phlebotomy certification?
Yes. The Phlebotomy Training Course provides the hands-on skills, instruction, and foundational knowledge needed to begin a national phlebotomy certification pathway through NHA or NPCT.
Completing the course does not automatically award national certification or guarantee examination eligibility. NHA and NPCT are separate certifying organizations with their own eligibility requirements, examination formats, expectations, and fees.
Students should review the Phlebotomy Certification Pathways page before selecting a certification pathway.
Will I be nationally certified after completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, or are there additional steps?
Yes. There are additional steps required to earn national certification. After successfully completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical and can pursue national certification through NHA or NPCT. The selected certifying organization awards national certification after the student meets its requirements and passes the applicable exam.
Does the Phlebotomy Training Course tuition include the national phlebotomy certification examination?
No. Phlebotomy Training Course tuition covers the course instruction, workbook, supplies, equipment, and hands-on practice provided by A Step Above Medical.
National certification is a separate step. Course tuition does not include examination fees, which you pay directly to NHA or NPCT. Because each organization establishes its own eligibility requirements, examination process, and fees, students should confirm the current information directly with their chosen certifying organization.
Which national phlebotomy certification pathways does A Step Above Medical support?
A Step Above Medical supports national phlebotomy certification pathways through NHA and NPCT. These are separate certifying organizations with different examinations and requirements.
The NPCT examination is completed online and includes 25 multiple-choice questions. A score of 70 percent is required to pass, and multiple attempts are allowed.
The NHA examination is longer and more comprehensive and requires additional preparation and testing. A Step Above Medical provides additional study resources for students pursuing the NHA pathway, including practice questions, practice examinations, and answer rationales.
Students should review the Phlebotomy Certification Pathways page and the requirements for the state where they plan to work.
Do certification, licensing, and employment requirements vary by state?
Yes. Certification, licensing, and employment requirements may vary by state and employer. Completing the Phlebotomy Training Course does not automatically provide national certification, a professional license, or eligibility for every position.
Depending on the state or employer, students may need to complete an examination, submit an application or documentation, obtain additional clinical experience, or meet other requirements. Students are responsible for reviewing the requirements that apply where they plan to work.
Students should also review the Training Locations directory for information related to the state where they plan to work.
Is the IV Therapy Training Course a state or national certification?
No. After successfully completing the IV Therapy Training Course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical. The certificate documents course completion and the hands-on training provided. It is not a professional license or a state or national certification.
Any professional license, credential, supervision, delegation, or other authorization required to perform IV-related procedures is separate from completing this course.
What am I allowed to do after completing the IV Therapy Training Course?
The procedures a student may perform after training depend on the student’s professional credentials, applicable state laws and regulations, employer or facility policies, and any required supervision or delegation.
Completing the IV Therapy Training Course does not, by itself, authorize medication administration or expand a healthcare professional’s scope of practice. Students are responsible for confirming the requirements that apply to their profession, employer, and state before performing IV-related procedures.
A Step Above Medical instructors can explain what the course covers, but they cannot determine or authorize a student’s legal scope of practice.
What certification pathway applies to Nevada students?
Nevada students should follow the NHA pathway. NPCT does not satisfy the Nevada licensing pathway described here.
After completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, eligible students may prepare for and take the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician examination. A Step Above Medical provides additional study resources for this pathway, including practice questions, practice examinations, and answer rationales.
After obtaining NHA certification, the student must separately complete the Nevada application process and submit the required documentation, including proof of national certification, to pursue the applicable Nevada laboratory personnel credential.
Completing the course does not automatically provide NHA certification or a Nevada credential. NHA and the State of Nevada determine examination eligibility, national certification, application approval, and credential issuance.
How often should I refresh my IV therapy training?
A Step Above Medical recommends refreshing your IV therapy knowledge and hands-on skills approximately every two years, especially if you do not perform IV insertions regularly.
The A Step Above Medical Certificate of Completion does not expire. It documents the date you completed the course. Your employer, facility, state, professional credential, or licensing authority may have separate competency, renewal, training, or continuing-education requirements.
Does the IV Therapy Training Course provide continuing-education credits?
No. Currently, the IV Therapy Training Course does not award continuing-education or CEU credits.
After successfully completing the course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical. The certificate documents course completion and the hands-on training provided, but it should not be submitted or represented as continuing-education credit.
Registration and payment
How to reserve your seat, pay your tuition, and understand the registration, cancellation, and rescheduling policies.
How do I register for a class?
Visit the Class Calendar and select the course, city, and date that work best for you. Open the scheduled class page, review the details, and select “Reserve a Seat” to register online.
After successfully registering, you will receive a confirmation email with your registration details. If you do not see it, check your spam or junk folder. If you still cannot find it, please contact A Step Above Medical for assistance.
Can I reserve my seat with a $150 deposit?
A $150 deposit option is available for the Phlebotomy Training Course. The deposit reserves your seat and is applied toward your tuition. The remaining tuition balance is due on the first day of class. You may also pay the tuition in full when registering.
The IV Therapy Training Course tuition is $295 and must be paid in full when registering. A deposit option is not available for the IV Therapy Training Course.
What happens if I need to reschedule or cancel?
The $150 deposit is nonrefundable because it reserves your seat and covers course supplies prepared for you. If your plans change, you may transfer your registration to another class once as a courtesy, at no additional charge and without forfeiting your deposit.
If you need to transfer your registration a second time, you must pay the remaining tuition balance in full before transferring or forfeit your deposit.
If you paid your tuition in full, the same one-time courtesy transfer applies. If you cancel and qualify for a refund under A Step Above Medical’s Terms and Conditions, the $150 deposit portion remains nonrefundable.
Please review the Terms and Conditions for the complete cancellation, transfer, and refund policy.
What happens if a class is full?
When a class reaches capacity, it will be marked full, and the waitlist will open. After joining the waitlist, you will receive an email confirming your place and explaining what happens next.
If a seat becomes available, we contact students in the order they joined the waitlist. The email will include a private registration link and the exact deadline for claiming the seat. The standard response period is 12 hours, though we may use a three-hour response period when the class begins within 48 hours.
Opening the registration link does not reserve the seat. Your seat is confirmed only after you complete registration and payment. You may also select “No, thank you” to decline the offer immediately so the seat can be offered to the next student.
If you do not register, pay, or decline before the stated deadline, the offer will expire, and the seat will automatically be offered to the next person on the waitlist.
When is the remaining tuition balance due?
For Phlebotomy Training Course students who reserve a seat with the $150 deposit option, the remaining tuition balance is due on the first day of class. Students will pay the instructor in cash or by credit card.
The IV Therapy Training Course does not have a deposit option. Students must pay the $295 tuition in full when registering.
What to expect in class
What to bring, what is provided, and how hands-on practice works during the Phlebotomy and IV Therapy Training Courses.
What should I bring to class?
Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing that allows safe access to your arms for hands-on practice. Short sleeves are recommended. Scrubs are welcome but are not required, and you do not need to purchase them for class.
You may bring a pen and paper for notes and a beverage or snack if desired. We do not provide food, and water availability may vary by training location.
You do not need to purchase or bring clinical supplies or equipment. A Step Above Medical provides everything required for the course, set up and ready for you to learn and practice.
Are course supplies included?
Yes. A Step Above Medical provides all clinical supplies and equipment required for the Phlebotomy Training Course and IV Therapy Training Course, and they are included in the tuition. Students do not need to purchase or bring their own clinical supplies or equipment.
For the Phlebotomy Training Course, the $150 deposit is nonrefundable because it reserves the student’s seat and covers course supplies purchased and prepared for that student.
Will I practice actual blood draws during the Phlebotomy Training Course?
Yes. The Phlebotomy Training Course includes live venipuncture practice conducted under strict supervision. On Day 1, students learn the foundational skills, practice with the equipment, and develop a consistent blood-draw routine. On Day 2, students complete supervised live venipuncture.
Students practice with one another under the instructor’s direct supervision. All live venipuncture practice is subject to the instructor’s discretion and safety requirements.
If you have a medical condition or concern that may affect your participation in live venipuncture, you may speak privately with the instructor. This does not prevent you from attending the course, and the instructor will determine an appropriate approach to your participation.
Will I receive hands-on IV insertion practice during the IV Therapy Training Course?
Yes. The IV Therapy Training Course includes substantial guided practice using training arms. Students practice IV insertion and cannulation techniques, catheter securing, saline-lock preparation, fluid administration, and troubleshooting with real equipment.
Live partner practice is also available, but it is optional. Although it is encouraged for eligible students who are comfortable participating, students may complete the course without performing or receiving a live IV insertion.
All hands-on practice is conducted under the instructor’s supervision and is subject to the instructor’s discretion and safety requirements.
