What to Expect

This four-hour course guides students through the peripheral IV insertion process, from patient assessment and vein selection through catheter insertion, securement, saline lock establishment, and troubleshooting. Instructor guidance emphasizes proper technique, consistent habits, and an understanding of why each step matters, so students can see how the complete IV insertion process fits together.

Who the Course Is For

This course is designed for students who already have the required foundational venipuncture skills. This includes phlebotomists, healthcare professionals seeking a refresher, nursing students who need additional hands-on practice, and students who have completed the A Step Above Medical Phlebotomy Training Course, even if they completed it immediately before the IV class.

Students take this course to build additional hands-on skills, add another practical skill to their professional tool belt, and document completion of the IV Therapy Training Course on their résumé. Prior IV insertion experience is not required.

  • Vascular anatomy and vein selection
  • Patient assessment
  • Aseptic technique
  • IV catheter selection and insertion
  • IV catheter securement

What You Receive

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a Certificate of Completion for the IV Therapy Training Course from A Step Above Medical. This certificate documents completion of the course but does not provide professional licensure or expand a student's legal scope of practice.

Come Ready for Hands-On Training

This is an in-person, instructor-guided course. A Step Above Medical keeps classes small so instructors can provide individual guidance, technique correction, and time for questions throughout the hands-on practice.

What We Provide

All IV equipment, training arms, and other supplies needed during the course are provided as part of your tuition. You do not need to purchase or bring your own IV equipment or training supplies.

What to Wear

Wear closed-toe shoes. If you are interested in participating in optional live partner practice, wear short sleeves or bring a short-sleeved shirt to change into.

What to Bring

You are welcome to bring a pen and paper for notes, but they are not required. You may also bring drinks and snacks because food is not provided during the course.

Before Your Class

Approximately one week before class, registered students receive a class information email with the training location, instructor information, parking details, and any final class-specific instructions.

A Step Above Medical provides the equipment and learning environment. Bring your foundational venipuncture skills and come ready to learn, practice, and build on them.

Course Completion and Scope of Practice

Upon successful completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion for the IV Therapy Training Course from A Step Above Medical. The certificate documents completion of the course and the hands-on training provided. It is not a professional license, a state or national certification, and it does not expand a student's legal scope of practice.

The procedures a student may perform after completing the course depend on the student's professional credentials, applicable state laws and regulations, employer or facility policies, and any required supervision or delegation.

Completing the IV Therapy Training Course does not, by itself, authorize medication administration. Students must follow the scope-of-practice and medication-administration requirements that apply to their professional credential and work setting.

Questions

Before you register

Are there prerequisites for the IV Therapy Training Course?

Yes. The IV Therapy Training Course is a second-level, hands-on course. Students must already have foundational venipuncture skills, including the ability to properly apply and secure a tourniquet, locate and palpate veins, and perform basic venipuncture using proper technique.

Students may meet this prerequisite by completing our Phlebotomy Training Course or through relevant hands-on experience. Prior IV insertion experience is not required.

Is the IV Therapy Training Course a state or national certification?

No. After successfully completing the IV Therapy Training Course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical. The certificate documents course completion and the hands-on training provided. It is not a professional license or a state or national certification.

Any professional license, credential, supervision, delegation, or other authorization required to perform IV-related procedures is separate from completing this course.

What am I allowed to do after completing the IV Therapy Training Course?

The procedures a student may perform after training depend on the student’s professional credentials, applicable state laws and regulations, employer or facility policies, and any required supervision or delegation.

Completing the IV Therapy Training Course does not, by itself, authorize medication administration or expand a healthcare professional’s scope of practice. Students are responsible for confirming the requirements that apply to their profession, employer, and state before performing IV-related procedures.

A Step Above Medical instructors can explain what the course covers, but they cannot determine or authorize a student’s legal scope of practice.

How often should I refresh my IV therapy training?

A Step Above Medical recommends refreshing your IV therapy knowledge and hands-on skills approximately every two years, especially if you do not perform IV insertions regularly.

The A Step Above Medical Certificate of Completion does not expire. It documents the date you completed the course. Your employer, facility, state, professional credential, or licensing authority may have separate competency, renewal, training, or continuing-education requirements.

Does the IV Therapy Training Course provide continuing-education credits?

No. Currently, the IV Therapy Training Course does not award continuing-education or CEU credits.

After successfully completing the course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical. The certificate documents course completion and the hands-on training provided, but it should not be submitted or represented as continuing-education credit.

Will I receive hands-on IV insertion practice during the IV Therapy Training Course?

Yes. The IV Therapy Training Course includes substantial guided practice using training arms. Students practice IV insertion and cannulation techniques, catheter securing, saline-lock preparation, fluid administration, and troubleshooting with real equipment.

Live partner practice is also available, but it is optional. Although it is encouraged for eligible students who are comfortable participating, students may complete the course without performing or receiving a live IV insertion.

All hands-on practice is conducted under the instructor’s supervision and is subject to the instructor’s discretion and safety requirements.
