The Phlebotomy Training Course runs over two days and is built around hands-on learning and supervised practice. You will spend the majority of the course with equipment in your hands, and practicing live venipuncture under supervision.

Who the course is for

The course is appropriate for everyone, from beginners with no healthcare background to experienced healthcare professionals refreshing or strengthening their phlebotomy skills. Small class sizes allow the instructor to work with each student individually, helping students develop proper technique, practical skills, and confidence through hands-on practice.

What you will cover

You will learn and practice the essential steps of phlebotomy, including proper tourniquet placement and tying, vein identification and palpation, proper venipuncture technique, patient interaction, safe handling and disposal of sharps, and proper aseptic standards.

Hands-on practice is a major part of the course. Students work through the blood-drawing process from start to finish, building a strong, consistent routine and developing muscle memory for the steps of a successful blood draw. The focus is not only on completing each step, but on understanding why it matters and developing good habits from the beginning. As the course progresses, supervised live venipuncture practice gives you opportunities to refine your technique, learn from each draw, and build confidence with the process.

After the course

Many students begin the course nervous or unsure of themselves, wondering whether they can really do this. Over two days of hands-on learning and supervised live venipuncture practice, those unfamiliar steps begin to form a routine, technique develops, and confidence replaces uncertainty.

By the end of the course, you have done more than learn the steps of phlebotomy, you have put those skills into practice. We want you to leave with practical experience, stronger technique, good habits, and confidence in the skills you have worked hard to develop. Just as importantly, we want you to leave knowing that you are capable of learning something new, taking on a challenge, and doing something that may have felt out of reach when you first walked through the door.

Upon successful completion of the Phlebotomy Training Course, you are eligible to take a national phlebotomy certification exam through NHA or NPCT.

What this course provides

Completing the Phlebotomy Training Course with A Step Above Medical and earning national certification are separate steps. National certification is awarded by the certifying organization after you successfully meet its requirements and pass the applicable exam.

Students who successfully complete the course receive a Certificate of Completion for the Phlebotomy Training Course from A Step Above Medical. The certificate documents the course and hands-on training completed and is separate from national certification and any applicable state credential.

National Certification Pathways

After successfully completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, students may pursue national phlebotomy certification through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or the National Phlebotomy Certification Testing Center (NPCT).

NHA and NPCT are independent certifying organizations with different examination formats and preparation expectations.

Phlebotomy certification, licensing, and employment requirements vary by state and employer. Completion of an A Step Above Medical course does not automatically result in national certification, state licensure, or employment eligibility. Students are responsible for completing any additional examinations, applications, documentation, clinical experiences, or state-specific requirements that may apply. Please review the information provided for your state before registering.

Come Ready for Hands-On Training

This is an in-person, instructor-guided course built around active participation and supervised practice. A Step Above Medical keeps classes small so instructors can provide individual guidance, technique correction, and time for questions throughout the hands-on learning experience.

What We Provide

All phlebotomy equipment and training supplies needed during the course are provided as part of your tuition. You do not need to purchase or bring your own needles, collection tubes, tourniquets, or other primary training supplies.

What to Wear

Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing with short sleeves or loose-fitting sleeves that can be safely raised well above the elbow. You may also bring a short-sleeved shirt to change into before live practice. Your clothing must allow safe access to your arms for supervised live venipuncture and participation as a practice partner. Please avoid tight sleeves that cannot be raised sufficiently for blood-drawing practice.

What to Bring

You are welcome to bring a pen and paper for notes, but they are not required. You may also bring personal drinks and snacks because food is not provided during the course. You do not need to bring your own phlebotomy equipment or training supplies.

Before Your Class

Approximately one week before class, registered students receive a reminder email with the training location, instructor information, parking details, and any final class-specific instructions.

A Step Above Medical provides the equipment, supplies, instruction, and learning environment. Bring your willingness to learn and come ready to practice, work hard, and build confidence.

Do I need prior healthcare experience to take the Phlebotomy Training Course?

Will I be nationally certified after completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, or are there additional steps?

Yes. There are additional steps required to earn national certification. After successfully completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical and can pursue national certification through NHA or NPCT. The selected certifying organization awards national certification after the student meets its requirements and passes the applicable exam.

Does the Phlebotomy Training Course tuition include the national phlebotomy certification examination?

No. Phlebotomy Training Course tuition covers the course instruction, workbook, supplies, equipment, and hands-on practice provided by A Step Above Medical.

National certification is a separate step. Course tuition does not include examination fees, which you pay directly to NHA or NPCT. Because each organization establishes its own eligibility requirements, examination process, and fees, students should confirm the current information directly with their chosen certifying organization.

Do certification, licensing, and employment requirements vary by state?

Yes. Certification, licensing, and employment requirements may vary by state and employer. Completing the Phlebotomy Training Course does not automatically provide national certification, a professional license, or eligibility for every position.

Depending on the state or employer, students may need to complete an examination, submit an application or documentation, obtain additional clinical experience, or meet other requirements. Students are responsible for reviewing the requirements that apply where they plan to work.

Can I reserve my seat with a $150 deposit?

A $150 deposit option is available for the Phlebotomy Training Course. The deposit reserves your seat and is applied toward your tuition. The remaining tuition balance is due on the first day of class. You may also pay the tuition in full when registering.

The IV Therapy Training Course tuition is $295 and must be paid in full when registering. A deposit option is not available for the IV Therapy Training Course.

Will I practice actual blood draws during the Phlebotomy Training Course?

Yes. The Phlebotomy Training Course includes live venipuncture practice conducted under strict supervision. On Day 1, students learn the foundational skills, practice with the equipment, and develop a consistent blood-draw routine. On Day 2, students complete supervised live venipuncture.

Students practice with one another under the instructor’s direct supervision. All live venipuncture practice is subject to the instructor’s discretion and safety requirements.

If you have a medical condition or concern that may affect your participation in live venipuncture, you may speak privately with the instructor. This does not prevent you from attending the course, and the instructor will determine an appropriate approach to your participation.
