The Phlebotomy Training Course at A Step Above Medical is held over two days from 10 AM–3 PM each day. Students learn through instruction, demonstration, and extensive hands-on practice, including supervised live venipuncture. This guide explains what to bring, what each day covers, how tuition and the deposit option work, and what happens after you successfully complete the program.

Before class: what to bring

Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that allows safe access to your arms for supervised live venipuncture. Short sleeves are recommended. You may bring a pen and paper for notes and a beverage or snack if desired. Food is not provided, and water availability may vary by training location.

You do not need to purchase or bring clinical supplies or equipment. All supplies and equipment required for the Phlebotomy Training Course are provided by A Step Above Medical.

You are welcome to wear scrubs if you already have them, but scrubs are not required. There is no need to purchase them for the course. Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and provides safe access to your arms is appropriate.

Day one: foundational skills and hands-on practice

Day one introduces the circulatory system, vein locations and selection, different needle types, proper tourniquet tying and placement, vein identification and palpation, patient interaction, safe sharps handling, and proper venipuncture technique.

The instructor demonstrates each step before students begin extensive hands-on practice using mannequin training arms and the equipment used during the complete blood-draw process. Through repetition and individual guidance, students develop proper technique, practical skills, a consistent blood-draw routine, and confidence in preparation for supervised live venipuncture on Day 2.

Day two: expanding skills and supervised live practice

Day two builds upon the foundational skills introduced on Day 1. Students learn about bloodborne pathogens and related safety practices, receive an introduction to syringe draws, and continue practicing the complete blood-draw process. Additional time is devoted to supervised live venipuncture.

The instructor observes each student’s technique and provides individual guidance throughout the process. Through repetition, students refine their technique, learn from each draw, strengthen their blood-draw routine, and build confidence using real equipment.

Tuition and how the deposit works

Tuition for the Phlebotomy Training Course starts at $695. Students may pay a $150 deposit to reserve their seat and pay the remaining tuition balance on the first day of class, or pay the tuition in full when registering.

The $150 deposit is nonrefundable and covers course supplies prepared for the student. If a student’s plans change, the student may move the registration to another class once as a courtesy, at no additional charge and without forfeiting the deposit.

If the student needs to transfer a second time, the remaining tuition balance must be paid to keep the registration and previously paid deposit on file. If the remaining balance is not paid, the deposit will be forfeited. All transfers are subject to A Step Above Medical’s Terms and Conditions.

After successful completion

After successfully completing the Phlebotomy Training Course, students receive a Certificate of Completion from A Step Above Medical. Students leave with hands-on venipuncture training and the foundational knowledge needed to begin a national phlebotomy certification pathway through NHA or NPCT.

National certification is a separate step and is not automatically awarded upon completion of the course. Each certifying organization has its own eligibility requirements, examination process, and fees. Before the course ends, the instructor explains the available pathways and the next steps for pursuing national certification.

Students are encouraged to speak with their instructor about their individual goals. The instructor can help them understand the available options and determine which certification pathway may be the best fit.

Who takes this course?

The Phlebotomy Training Course is appropriate for everyone, from beginners with no healthcare experience to experienced healthcare professionals who want to learn, strengthen, or refresh their venipuncture skills.

Our students come from many different backgrounds. They include nurses, nursing students, physicians, dental assistants, dentists, estheticians, medical assistants, certified nursing assistants, recent high school graduates exploring the medical field, people preparing for a new career, and individuals interested in additional employment opportunities.

The course may also appeal to students seeking hands-on clinical experience before applying to medical school or another healthcare program.

No prior healthcare or phlebotomy experience is required. Small class sizes and individual instruction allow students to receive guidance based on their current experience and skill level. We are happy to help students at every experience level learn and develop their skills.

Where phlebotomy training can lead

Phlebotomists work in hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, blood donation centers, physicians’ offices, and other healthcare settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for phlebotomists was $45,230 in May 2025. Employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with approximately 18,000 openings projected each year on average. Actual pay, qualifications, and employment opportunities vary by location and employer.

For some students, phlebotomy training is a starting point for working in healthcare. The patient interaction, safety practices, and hands-on clinical skills developed during training may also be useful when pursuing nursing, medical assisting, laboratory work, or other healthcare pathways.

If you already have foundational venipuncture skills

Students who can properly apply and secure a tourniquet, locate and palpate veins, and perform basic venipuncture using proper technique may be ready to register directly for the IV Therapy Training Course.

The IV Therapy Training Course is a four-hour, second-level course focused on peripheral IV insertion and related skills. Prior IV insertion experience is not required.
